How and why is data collected?
All web servers track basic information about their visitors. This includes, but is not limited to IP addresses, browser details, and referring pages. None of this information can personally identify specific visitors to this site.
Making Sense of English collects data for two main purposes:
- Email addresses via opt-in forms to send subscribers updates and notify subscribers of new posts. We do not ask for your name or any additional information.
- Google analytic data to track visits to our website and know how well our website is performing in terms of number of visitors and which posts are being read in order to improve the performance of our website.
When visitors leave comments on the site, the following data is collected to help detect and eliminate spam: data shown in the comments form, visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you have an account and you log in to this site, a temporary cookie is set to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, several cookies are set up to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

Third-Party Use of Personal Information
We will never sell your information.
Google advertising notice
Any advertisements served by Google, Inc. and affiliated companies may be controlled using cookies. These cookies allow Google to display ads based on your visits to this site and other sites that use Google advertising services. You may opt out of Google’s cookie usage.
How long I retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on my website (if any), I also store the personal information provided in user profiles. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). As the website administrator, I can also see and edit that information.
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
